Guest Commentary: Bill Shapiro is a known commodity in Kansas City. He’s the creator and host of “Cyprus Avenue” which premiered on KCUR-FM in October of 1978. The weekly radio show has aired on more than 50 stations in the United States. He is the author of “The CD Rock and Roll Library,” 1988, and “The Rock and Roll Review” 1991, both published by Andrews & McMeel. He’s a tax and estate planner since 1962. He received his law degree from the University of Michigan. Along with his radio show and law practice, Shapiro created “Folly Cyprus Avenue Live.”
Six years ago I started this series to help maintain and preserve one of Kansas City’s great treasures. From Jerry Lee Lewis to Randy Newman to Roseann Cash and Art Garfunkel the Folly has proved that it is simply Kansas City’s best venue for live musical performance. From the well known to the unknown, the glorious sounds of rock & roll, blue grass, soul, reggae, country and gospel have transported listeners and performers alike.
One of the artists who was moved by the experience was Texas singer/songwriter, Sam Baker, who volunteered to donate a performance to benefit the Theater which is now celebrating the 30th anniversary of being spared from the wrecking ball by some of Kansas City’s farsighted leading citizens.
To help celebrate, on August 25th we’re taking Sam up on his offer. I want to acknowledge his generous spirit by selling out the house that night. It will be a first – the night Jerry Lee opened the series we came within a dozen or so tickets of a sellout and we’ve come close a couple of times but we’ve never sold all 1078 seats. What better way to acknowledge Sam’s generosity and the Folly’s legacy is there than to be there on August 25th with every seat occupied. To reach that goal and, hopefully, to expose new folks to the Folly, tickets are priced from $10 to $25 which will buy you an unforgettable evening with an artist who will amaze and move you.
So please join Sam and me and 1077 others by calling the Folly box office – 816 474-4444, tell your friends and get ready for a night to remember.
