Art Engaging the Audience

February 2 @ 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm
Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art

In conjunction with Janet Cardiff: Forty-Part Motet, join curator Leesa Fanning in a discussion of experiential contemporary art, which engages visitors through participation.

From Christo and Jeanne-Claude to Marina Abramović, the talk will encompass diverse artists who create immersive installations, prepare food meant to be shared, mount massive tree planting campaigns, and arrange for singers to give the gift of a song to an individual within museum galleries. In Abramović’s The Artist is Present, the artist sits with one visitor in silence, looking deeply into their eyes, with emotionally moving results.

Briefly touching on historical precedents from art of the 1960s, as well as relevant theory on relational aesthetics, Fanning’s survey will focus primarily on the art of today. Visitors will leave with an understanding of the prevalence of participatory contemporary art and the unique ways artists invite audiences to become a key part of the art itself.
