Harriman-Jewell Director Talks Anniversary

Clark Morris, the current executive director of the Harriman-Jewell Series, worked with series founder, Dr. Richard Harriman several years before Harriman’s death. He started with Harriman in 2003 as Harriman moved to artistic director.

“We succeed when we have a sense that we have brought the world’s best to town. We give our audience members access to the world’s greatest artists,” he observes. “We have had 50 years of consistent standards that were outlined by Dr. Harriman. He personally selected every artists and much of the guidelines were set up because of his tastes, his appreciation and his refinement. Plus he always knew the artists we should be paying attention. I trained at the feet of Dr. Harriman and learned his methods of discernment.”

Two commissioned projects are part of the anniversary season. The first is with Mark Morris Dance Company and the second is with the Parson Dance Company. “I don’t pick favorites, but these will be unique and special events.” This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the Discovery Series, the free concert series that brings in up-and-coming artists. “We strive to provide access to everyone so that they can experience music in a concert hall.”

Morris hopes the community will continue to take pride in the series. “What we do is an outreach to the community. We are part of what makes Kansas City special. The decisions I make are often through the lens of keeping Richard’s vision going strong and keeping his legacy alive. The future will include keeping us relevant for the next 50 years. We filled a voice 50 years ago as the city wanted more culture. Our roots are deep and we have to keep those strong.”
