The Johnson County Museum has been awarded accreditation by the American Alliance of Museums, the highest national recognition for the nation’s museums. Approximately 3% of the nation’s museums have this distinction, with only two in the Greater Kansas City area and only 11 in the state of Kansas.

The accreditation designates commitment to “excellence, accountability, high professional standards and continued institutional improvement,” stated the announcement. The rigorous accreditation process took three years, including self-studies and site visits.

“Accredited museums are a community of institutions that have chosen to hold themselves publicly accountable to excellence,” said Alliance President and CEO, Laura L. Lott, in the announcement.

The museum was founded in 1967 but moved into its current location in the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center in 2017, the museum’s 50th anniversary. The Johnson County Museum, operating within the Johnson County Park and Recreation District, also runs the Lanesfield Historic Site, near Edgerton, Kansas.
