We invite you to spend an evening with renowned artist Rashid Johnson as he speaks about his work that is the subject of Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art’s current exhibition, Hail We Now Sing Joy. The exhibition features new paintings, sculpture, and the Midwest debut of a monumental multi-media installation by Johnson. New York–based artist employs a range of materials in his new works, which are grounded in complex explorations of history, identity, and escapism. For example, in his “escape collages,” layered images of lush palm trees allude to his imagining tropical landscapes beyond his Chicago hometown, while the title references impulses derived from slavery in America and Afro-futurism. Through the framework of personal history, Johnson connects with myriad social and cultural histories of the past and present.
Rashid Johnson: Hail We Now Sing Joy is organized by Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City, Missouri, and curated by Erin Dziedzic, director of curatorial affairs at Kemper Museum.
