Is there life beyond Earth? Linda Hall Library’s current free exhibition, Life Beyond Earth? explores this question that has fascinated humanity for centuries. Given the vast number of stars and planets in the known universe, it seems possible that there could be an abundance of life, including intelligent life capable of interstellar communication and travel; however, scientists have found no credible evidence beyond our planet.

The exhibition, open through June 2025 at the Linda Hall Library at 5109 Cherry Street, captivates visitors with a history of the scientific search for extraterrestrial life from the 16th century to today. With advanced technology and unanswered questions, the search for extraterrestrial life has accelerated over the past half-century, moving from fringe science and sensationalist news to legitimate research and front-page headlines. The question is no longer are we alone, but are we ready for contact?

Life Beyond Earth? is accompanied by a series of programs featuring expert researchers, scientific journalists, pilots and astronauts discussion societal implications, environmental concerns, and biological and technological challenges in the search for extraterrestrial life:

  • February 20 – From Sensationalism to Science: Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena in a Scientific Context
In this program, a multidisciplinary panel of experts will explore the scientific process of studying UAP and discuss a roadmap for future research.
  • March 27 – Breakthrough Listen: The Search for Ourselves Among the Stars
In this lecture, Dr. Andrew Siemion, Principal Investigator for Breakthrough Listen, the world’s largest search for signatures of advanced technology beyond Earth, will discuss advances in astrobiology and the search for extraterrestrial life.
  • May 1 – Back to Earth: An Evening with Astronaut Nicole Stott
In this talk, Astronaut Nicole Stott will share how we can tackle the planet’s most pressing problems, from water insecurity and pollution to the existential threat of climate change. She will share what she learned on the International Space Station about high-stakes problem solving and survival, along with stories of scientists and change-makers already making a difference around the world.
