OCTA Begins Preparations for 2017-2018 Season

As OCTA wraps up the first ever New Works Playwright Competition with the winning play, The Green Book Wine Club Train Trip, they begin preparations for their 2017-2018 season. Michelle Tyrene Johnson’s play enjoyed standing ovations for both of her Winner Workshop events this July. Teresa Leggard directed an all-star cast in this moving the play about the Negro Motorist Green Book. This was an actual book that guided black people on their travels in pre-segregation America.

We can’t wait to see what the Second Annual New Works Playwright Competition will bring. Submission and deadline information will be on www.olathetheatre.org and social media within the next month. Until then, check out the season opener, Ruthless! This is a campy mock musical that tells the story of a young girl on her quest to play the lead in her school play. It’s outrageous, it’s fun, it’s not your mother’s musical! It is directed by Jay Coombes with music direction by Tim Braselton. Plus, the roles of Tina Denmark and Louise Lerman are double cast, giving more young local talent the chance to shine.

OCTA follows with their second show, Anne of Green Gables. This classic tale is sure to warm your heart. Then, check back in the spring for the second musical of the season, Violet. This beautiful musical enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run and starred Sutton Foster. Audition information for both Anne of Green Gables and Violet will be posted here.

You don’t want to miss out on all this fun! OCTA is also thrilled to feature a website blog that highlights director notes, press releases and show photos. Send us a note on Facebook or shoot us an email to learn how you can get involved. Can’t wait to see you at the theater!
