Your home is an extension of yourself, a physical center for expressing your personality, and a collection of your life’s many stories. Displaying all of that truthfully is no small order. We’ve outlined the four keys to beautifully designing the aesthetic of any space. Let’s get started.
- Have intention
Think of any work of art—be it music, literature, film, painting, illustration, etc.—that has inspired you. What did this piece say to you? Why did it grab your attention…and keep it? The person who created it had intention when they created it, a message they wanted to share with the world. The same goes for curating the aesthetic of your home.
Think of what you want it to convey to others when they enter your home for the first time. You’re not decorating someone else’s home; you’re expressing your own unique self with what you choose to display in any given room. Contemplate that message and write it down. - Choose a focal point for each space
Every great story has a heart, a focal point by which people are drawn in and held captivated. When determining how you’re going to arrange a space, choose a single focal point that pulls the entire room together and then proceed to fill in the details around it.
This could be anything of your choosing: the Persian rug you picked up on one of your travels, the velvet sofa you couldn’t live without, or an exciting piece of art you scored from an up-and-coming artist. Everything else is just details that you can pick and choose once you’ve established the focus of the room. - Determine a color scheme
Color can influence many things: emotions, actions, feelings. The use of color is beyond important when trying to curate an intentional aesthetic in a space. So again, review your message that you wrote down in the beginning. What influence do you want to have when you or a guest enters your home or a certain room? Do you want them to feel inspired? Productive? Relaxed and at ease? Do you want to stir up passionate discussions? Or do you want to close the door and be alone, undisturbed by outside forces? Use color to express intention and self as well as to create a certain atmosphere for anyone who is able to enjoy it. Also, when filling in those details, stay close to your color scheme for a cohesive look. - Be purposeful with your lighting
Even if you’ve masterfully applied the other elements, their intended effects will be rendered useless if it isn’t implemented accordingly. Proper lighting, whether in the form of light-diffusing roman shades, strategically placed sconces, or a pane of colorful stained glass, will not only illuminate your intended message, but will also add a welcome dash of visual interest.
