Artist to Watch: Julia Haile
Julia Haile is taking Kansas City by storm. “Her voice and stage presence are second to none, and her body of work is growing to be some of the best to come out of this city,” said Bill Sundahl, special events coordinator of KKFI 90.1 FM Kansas City Community Radio. Haile performed with well-known singer-songwriter Barclay Martin at the June 30 “Collaborations” fundraiser event for KKFI at the Folly Theater.

Death on the Mountain: ‘Everest’ comes to the Kauffman Center
In the spring of 1996, “Outside” magazine sent writer Jon Krakauer to Mount Everest chasing a story: the commercialization of Everest. Since 1985, tourists with little or no climbing experience had been able to reach the summit thanks to company tours designed to allow any reasonably fit person to make the trek. In the years that followed, as many as 40 people per day reached the summit as a part of a paying group.

In a city with abundant dance opportunities, the dance faculty at the Conservatory pride themselves on producing motivated and advanced students who perform throughout their student careers and are ready to join professional companies after graduation. Students have performed the Kansas City Ballet’s Nutcracker, Romeo and Juliet and Firebird, the Nutcracker tour with Albany Berkshire Ballet, Setting the Stage with Friends of Alvin Ailey and more.
