Ibsen Ballet Theatre Performs ‘The Nutcracker’

Ibsen Dance Theatre and Ibsen Ballet Theatre Youth Co. now performs “The Nutcracker” ballet every other year, as a benefit for the Northland Christmas Store. The company performed it every year from 1994 to 1999 and then moved to every other year. Preparing for the 12thperformance, directors Susie and Van Ibsen, along with their daughter Cameo, who leads the ballet company, have given proceeds to the store that helps about 1,200 families annually with food and presents. This year, more than 80 students will give of their time for two performances Dec. 17 at 2 and 7 p.m. at Staley High School,  2800 N.E. Shoal Creek Parkway in Kansas City-North.

“Ibsen Dance Theatre’s production of ‘Nutcracker’ fills many needs in the Northland. It is a chance for the school’s ballet students to perform in a professional production complete with scenery and costumes and at the same time perform community service by donating their time and talents to benefit the area’s less fortunate. It’s an affordable live dance performance for Northland families to attend during the holiday season,” Susie says.

I have had the honor to know the Ibsen family for more than 15 years. First I was a reporter in the Northland where I covered everything community. When the summers rolled around, I had the joy of Gladstone Theatre in the Park. In the early winter, it was “The Nutcracker.” There’s something gracious about the Ibsen family. They are hard workers and believe in giving back to their community. There are lots of generous dance teachers in the Northland. Don’t get me wrong. I simply have had a longer relationship with the Ibsens. By the way, I also know Ikey Harris, one of the long-time coordinators of the Northland Christmas Store. See “The Nutcracker” Saturday and benefit lots of people — you will be an audience for the dancers and your ticket proceeds will aid those in need.
