Listen to three artists, Hong Chun Zhang, Bill Bowerman, and Justin Marable, whose work is featured in the Lawrence Arts Center’s 2017 Benefit Art Auction Exhibition.
A Chinese born and US based artist, Hong Chun Zhang received BFA from Beijing Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1994. Two years later, she came to America and graduated with MA from Sacramento State University in 2002 and MFA from University of California Davis in 2004. Hong currently lives and works in Lawrence Kansas. Hong’s work has been exhibited in Asia, Europe and North America. She was a featured artist of 2012 Lawrence Arts Center Benefit Auction. Her work can be found in DSL Collection (Paris) The White Rabbit Collection (Sydney) The Origo Collection (Zurich) Spencer Museum of Art (Lawrence) and Ulrich Art Museum (Wichita). Hong is represented by Haw Contemporary in Kansas City.
Bill Bowerman’s artistic purpose is to create simple, surprising works that are beautiful, evocative, and/or whimsical. He mostly does line drawings and scanography (photography using a flat-bed scanner for input instead of a digital camera). Bill’s images explore ordinary events or objects, often involving people. Moods, metaphors, and ambiguities abound, so personal interpretations and conversations are encouraged. He has been an active artist since the mid 1980’s and his work has been in galleries, juried exhibitions, and private residences. In January-February 2007, the Lawrence Arts Center featured Bowerman’s scanography works in a one-person exhibition in the main gallery.
Throughout his life, Justin has learned and wandered within the boundaries of his Midwestern homeland, observing the social and physical landscape of the surrounding region. He finds inspiration in geography and history of the Midwest. Social issues drive much of his work as well as influences from family, nature, and everyday life. Justin graduated from the University of Kansas in 2005 with a B.F.A. in printmaking and resides in Lawrence with his wife and three daughters. He works full time as an artist at his East Lawrence studio inside Art Emergency, and at home as a husband and father. In Kansas, he continuously works to create a life rooted in art, family, and community.
