As it celebrates its 85th anniversary, Kansas City’s premier institution of history, culture and storytelling is embracing a fresh identity: Kansas City Museum is now The Museum of Kansas City.
This transformation marks a significant shift—from a history museum focused solely on the past to a dynamic city museum that explores Kansas City’s past, present and future through the lens of the humanities.
“We envisioned a brand identity that truly reflects our mission—to connect, inspire, and celebrate the diverse cultural fabric of Kansas City,” said CEO Annamarie Tutera.
The new brand features Kansas City’s signature red and blue, symbolizing the city’s welcoming spirit and the vibrant energy of its people. This milestone comes as the institution commemorates its founding on May 5, 1940, in Kansas City’s Historic Northeast.
Exciting Anniversary Celebrations & Events
Throughout the anniversary year, The Museum of Kansas City will host special events, new exhibits, and engaging programs—including the much-anticipated 10th annual Derby Party on May 3.
Widely regarded as Kansas City’s best Derby-themed event, this year’s celebration promises an unforgettable afternoon featuring: Live music by The Phantastics, Dancing, cocktails, mocktails and Southern bites, Silver, black and white Derby fashion and fun surprises & a stylish shopping experience. Donna’s Dress Shop will donate 50% of all Derby attire purchased for the party to support the Museum.
