Art of Life @ 50+: Executive Director’s Letter, July/August 2018

Welcome back!

It’s time to seize the day, to travel, take a day trip to Crystal Bridges or a week-long trip to New York City and go to the theater and museums, or better yet, consider a slow boat down the rivers of Europe. You have the time, so why not explore areas that you’ve always wanted to see? There’s no time like the present.

Art of Life @ 50+ is designed to be a wake-up call to your senses and desires. Take the time to learn something new. Lifelong learning serves everyone and inspires us to broaden our horizons. Consider a lecture at the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, the Kansas City Public Library series, the National World War I Museum, Rockhurst University, UMKC Cockefair Lectures, UMKC’s New Letters Literary Initiative Events, the Miller Nichols Library or Unity on the Plaza. There are a multitude of lectures to attend that enrich your mind and spark your imagination. Why not learn from experts in their field first-hand? You’ll be glad you did.

How about learning a new skill? You have the time, so why not take a moment and dive into something that you’ve always wanted to do? Try mastering a foreign language, working with clay, singing, instrument, watercolor or oil painting, dancing, book club, writing a book, bookbinding, photography or yoga. How about cooking classes at the Culinary Center of Kansas City, or at L’École Culinaire on the Plaza? Floral arranging is an art, and who doesn’t like adorning their table for friends with beautiful flowers? Or maybe you would like to learn about birds on a guided hike in nature. I have so many ideas for you, why not start now?

Art of Life @ 50+ would like to thank our special section “Creative Fire” participants that have accomplished creating artful lives and by no means are close to stopping. We are honoring and grateful to Lonnie McFadden, Rod Parks, Larry Schwarm and Maria Vasquez-Boyd for sharing their journeys with us.

Get involved, challenge yourself, step outside your comfort zone to be inspired, to learn something new, and embrace a new perspective, for the best is yet to come!

Art of Life @ 50+ welcomes your comments and suggestions, as we continue to expand. Thank you for growing with us. See you next March when the crocuses are peeking out of the ground.

Have a happy, thought-provoking, adventurous life! It’s time to create the new you…
