A First for KC and the Heart of America Shakespeare Festival: “Shakespeare in Love”

The Heart of America Shakespeare Festival will produce Shakespeare in Love June 11 – July 7, 2019 for an expanded season—from a three-week run to four weeks—in Southmoreland Park. The Festival has purchased exclusive rights to be the first in Kansas City to present the stage version of Shakespeare in Love. This story includes scenes from the play Romeo and Juliet, and also the world of the Elizabethan theatre – a great way to make Shakespeare’s play more accessible to a modern audience.

This will be the first time in HASF history that we will produce a Shakespeare-inspired play for our summer Festival. Producing a new Shakespeare-inspired play based on a popular film offers opportunities to connect Shakespeare’s plays to new audiences. Expanding our production run also allows our community even more opportunity to enjoy FREE professional theatre.

The play Shakespeare in Love, at its center, is focused on Shakespeare’s writing and presenting the first performance of his play, Romeo and Juliet. This lively and engaging modern play featuring Shakespeare, the playwright, as the leading character, will engage, educate and entertain a modern audience and give them greater insight into what is perhaps his most popular and well-known play, Romeo and Juliet. Shakespeare in Love will make you fall in LOVE with Shakespeare!

Shakespeare in Love runs June 11 – July 7, Tuesdays through Sundays in Southmoreland Park. No show July 4. Show Monday, July 1. Gates open at 6:00 p.m. Showtime is 8:00 p.m. For more information, visit www.kcshakes.org
