An Evening with Noweli Rooks with a lecture on her work: A Passionate Mind in Relentless Pursuit: The Vision of Mary Mcleod Bethune
Meet Mary McLeod Bethune, one of 17 children born to freed slaves who grew up to become a champion of equality and education for children. She became a confidante of Eleanor Roosevelt and was the only woman of color representing the U.S. at the founding conference of the United Nations. In celebration of her 150th birthday, her biographer, Professor Noweli Rooks from Brown University, will introduce us to this remarkable woman on March 11 as part of the UMKC Cockefair Chair’s lecture series.

About the Lecture
An interdisciplinary scholar, Noliwe Rooks is the L. Herbert Ballou University Professor of Africana Studies, and the chair of Africana Studies at Brown University. Her work explores how race and gender both impact and are impacted by popular culture, social history and political life in the United States. She works on the cultural and racial implications of beauty, fashion and adornment, race, capitalism and education, and the urban politics of food and cannabis production.
