Laying an Artistic Foundation
Isaac Lee felt confident in his future as an illustrator when he enrolled at the Kansas City Art Institute (KCAI) a couple of years ago. Now he’s not so sure — animation, for instance, is on his mind these days. Digital art, too. Even sculpture. Yet this diversification of Lee’s curiosity — owed, he says, to his experience in KCAI’s immersive program for freshmen, Foundation — hasn’t confused the 20-year-old.

Three Great Orchestras, Three Great Conductors
One of the hallmarks of the Harriman-Jewell Series is its presentation of the world’s greatest orchestras. But next season, the Series is outdoing itself. Three major orchestras will appear in Kansas City, accompanied by their conductors along with highly acclaimed soloists. On September 26, The Philadelphia Orchestra conducted by Yannick Nézet-Séguin will perform Rachmaninoff’s Symphonic Dances and violinist Lisa Batiashvili will be the soloist for Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto.

Strong Women Grace the Stage of JCCC’s Carlsen Center for 2018-2019
Strong women performers highlight the 2018-2019 Carlsen Center Presents season at Johnson County Community College. And yes, the phrase “strong women performers” can mean two different things. Are these women giving a strong performance? Or are the women themselves full of tough-as-nails, take-no-prisoners strength? The answer: both. Take, for example, pop and folk superstar Emmylou Harris, who will be performing for the Carlsen Center series on Oct. 13 in Yardley Hall.

The Whole Person’s 8th Annual Expressions Art Exhibition celebrates artists’ abilities and unique talents. The exhibition adds diversity to the arts community and exposes audiences to art that otherwise might not be seen. Expressions breaks down some of the barriers that artists with disabilities face, offering art gallery experiences that are accessible to people of all abilities.
