Unlikely circumstances pull together Mr. Green, an elderly Jewish man who’s become a recluse with the twenty-something, career-obsessed Ross Gardiner. What do they have in common? They’re both lonely – and they’re both hiding something. What ensues is a comedic drama about friendship, family and forgiveness.
It’s all part of the Jewish Community Center’s upcoming production of “Visiting Mr. Green,” the award-winning play by Jeff Baron. Performances are May 31, June 2, 7 and 9 at 7:30 p.m. and June 10 at 2 p.m. in the White Theatre at the Jewish Community Campus, 5801 W. 115th St., Overland Park, Kan.
This show stars Greg Butell as Mr. Green and Bob Kohler as Ross Gardiner; both actors have impressive resumes having performed at various theaers throughout Kansas City. The production is directed by the JCC’s Director of Theatre, Mark Swezey.
The JCC’s Director of Cultural Arts, Krista Blackwood, said these two characters have allowed difference to stand in the way of living and loving. And both need to find a way to come to terms with that. While on the surface they appear different, Mr. Green and Ross find their sameness as the play develops.
“Although the characters in this play are Jewish, the core learning in this play is that people are the same everywhere,” Blackwood said. “Everyone knows someone like Mr. Green, and everyone knows someone like Ross. Their specific characteristics make the story interesting, but their humanness and their individual struggles are universal.”
