Connect with Artists at Lawrence’s Art in the Park

Work by Aimee Fresia

On September 16th and 17th the Lawrence Art Guild hosts Art in the Park in South Park, Lawrence, Kansas.  Over 125 artists’ booths will be set up. Visitors and patrons are invited to the park, to listen to live music, to grab a bite to eat from food trucks or a beer from Free State Brewery. As you stroll through the park, feel free to chat with the artists. Many of the works that they have created carry wonderful stories.

If you stop by Aimee Fresia’s tent, you’ll find mixed media pieces that carry messages of deep meaning, works that question what is success or the effects of family dynamics. Printmaker Caitlin Penny’s pieces feature sensitive representations of animals and wildlife, but talking with Caitlin you will find further messages about caring for the earth within her work. Painter and illustrator Jamin Still creates luminous works of magical tales.  “I paint images that inspire me to write stories. I love the marriage of image and word and how they work together to communicate powerful ideas”, Jamin Still.

Allison Ice uses 3-D printing alongside traditional metalsmithing to create jewelry with charged symbolism, pieces that move us through affect theory. Jennifer Benner-Willis’s unique style of polymer clay jewelry is highly detailed and draws on imagery from traditional folklore with a heavy emphasis on storytelling. If you visit with jewelry maker Tammy Shaw, you will find another type of story – one that features the stones that she and her husband travel the country to mine and then cut and fashion into works of fine art. They love discussing the science and history of stones and stone cutting.

If you visit with ceramic artists you will learn about how the beauty that her parents sought affects Kim Brooks exquisite porcelain ware, or where the inspiration comes from in Melanie Harvey’s whimsical stone-ware. Erin Erickson will be at Art in the Park with her richly colored porcelain and white stoneware. “The ceramics process is one that parallels many lessons in life. My pottery is the physical vision I have from life events or memories of places or times that I have seen.” – Erin Erickson
