Folly Jazz Series Present the Ellis Marsalis Quartet

Ellis Marsalis Quartet
Friday Feb. 11, 8pm
“JazzTalk” pre-concert interview with Ellis Marsalis at 7 pm Hosted by Steve Kraske
Ellis Marsalis is regarded by many as the premier modern jazz pianist in New Orleans. When he began his career fifty years ago, Ellis was one of the few New Orleans musicians who didn’t specialize in Dixieland or rhythm & blues. He played with fellow modernists Cannonball Adderley, Nate Adderley and Al Hirt.

Although Ellis has recorded nearly twenty of his own albums, and has been a featured artist on countless others, he shunned the spotlight to focus on teaching. As a leading jazz educator at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and the University of New Orleans, he has influenced the careers of Terence Blanchard, Harry Connick, Jr., Nicholas Payton and his four musician sons: Wynton, Branford, Delfayo and Jason.

Ellis and his sons are group recipients of the 2011 NEA Jazz Masters Award.

Joining Ellis on center stage at the Folly are Derek Douget on sax, Jason Stewart on bass and Jason Marsalis on drums.
