Incorporate Color and Pattern into Your Home Decor This Summer

It is about time to say good bye all-white minimalist trend. Pattern and color are very popular this summer season, and we don’t see that changing any time soon! Incorporating color into your home can be a bit overwhelming, especially if you embraced the grey and white color palettes over the last couple of year. Luckily, there are easy ways to incorporate color into your home.

Pick One Bold Piece and Work Around It

Remember that one time you saw that awesome area rug with a funky pattern and thought, “Wow, I love that, but it doesn’t go with anything in my home.”? Or maybe there was a large vase in a bright hue that just seemed too loud for your living room. These items have probably stuck in your mind and for good reason.

When you saw those neat bold items your sensory receptors said, “Oh these are fun, we like these. These items make us happy.” You want items in your home that trigger a happy feeling and no matter how loud you can use bolder prints and colors strategically in your home and coordinate them tastefully.

Pick Complementary Colors for Smaller Decor Items

Okay, not all of us are designers and have probably been out of art class for longer than we would like to say, but a quick google search will pull up a color wheel to help you pick colors that compliment that bright piece that tickled your fancy. Keep these items small. Think throw pillows, small pieces of art, a traditional lamp in a cool complimentary color. These are easy things to find and generally pretty inexpensive.

Keep Furniture Neutral

Unless you bought a teal couch, more power to you if you did, keeping furniture neutral helps give your bold focal point a stage to shine on. Using neutral colors help keep the space from becoming too busy. If you did buy that teal couch, choose rugs made of natural fibers in colors that occur in nature and decor pieces to a minimum.

Metallic Accent Furniture is Your Friend

Brushed gold as a neutral decor element is absolutely huge right now and can add subtle elegance to a space with a brighter focal point. There are great options for side tables, standing lamps, and even coffee tables that are both beautiful and functional.

Starting Off Small Can Make a Bright Impact

Okay, so maybe you aren’t quite ready for that bright area rug. That is okay; it can be easy to add color into your home one small piece at a time. Here are a few items you can find in bright patterns and colors that won’t leave you feeling out of your element.

  • Throw pillows
  • Blankets
  • Bright pots for indoor plants
  • Small painted trinkets (think blue or yellow ceramic birds)
  • A small piece of art

Keep Lines Clean and Modern

The secret to success when adding bold color into your home is to keep all of the elements modern. Stay away from clunky, dated items like large, over the top leather couches and ornate coffee tables. Furniture with a modern design is very minimal and shouldn’t overwhelm a room. You want pieces with visual interest to take authority in a room and not draw the eye away from those items. If you have chosen a bright couch or patterned chair, choose a more low-key style that lets the fabric speak for itself.

These are just some guidelines. Feel free to experiment as much as you would like with color this season!
