Lawrence Art in the Park – A Celebration of Imagination

Work by Mark Freeman

On September 16th and 17th the Lawrence Art Guild will host the 59th annual Art in the Park, a juried fine art fair in South Park, just south of downtown Lawrence, Kansas. Walking through the tree-lined park filled with flowers and music is a treat. Each booth presents a unique vision. Lawrence Art Guild’s Art in the Park works to bring this diversity to the show. From painting to paper arts, digital to drawing, upcycling, sculpture, ceramics, jewelry, leather, glass, photography and fiber, a breadth of style and mediums are on display.

Even within traditional categories such as painting, there is a wonderful variety of styles.  From large landscapes to florals, abstracts and watercolors, Art in the Park presents a wide range of work. Evan Brown, known as Doodle Dood creates fun brightly-colored pop art whereas Steven Dragan’s watercolors are sensitively painted masterpieces. Mark Freeman’s bold splashes of color will draw some viewers, while others might be captivated by Jamin Still’s magical fantasy illustrations.

This range of styles continues within other categories. Within the fiber category you will find the Kellogg sisters and their fabulously creative quilting work as well as weavers, silk painters, and creative clothing creators. Within wood, you will find a wood turner, a sculptor, a carver, a wood burner, a musical instrument creator as well as furniture makers and wall artists. Within jewelry the work ranges from polymer clay to 3-D printed pieces, to upcycled works, to fine silver work.

Sculpture ranges from wood to wire, beaded pieces to upcycling. Within the drawing category, Art in the Park has Jen Foster with her highly detailed black and white drawings as well as Wanda Taylor with her sensitive colored pencil animal portraits. Paper artists range from Angie Pickman with her charmingly cut paper images to Kathie Duguid with her small quilled work, to book-maker Erin Mueller. Printmakers’ work ranges from the large stylized designs of Lori Stanziola to the abstract work of Brandon Bailey.

Come to Lawrence’s South Park, grab a treat at the food trucks, a beer from Free State Brewery’s stand, or a fruity drink from a Mocktail bar, listen to live music as you wander among the booths and enjoy the celebration of imagination that is Art in the Park.
