Calling all seasoned makers and the craft-curious! A new event series at the National WWI Museum and Memorial – Makers Social – premiers on Thursday, March 14 at 5:30 p.m.
An evening happy hour of history, handcrafts and hors d’oeuvres awaits! Each quarter, Makers Social will highlight the vibrant legacy of wartime artistry with Kansas City’s creative community while guests make their own handcrafts (or make progress on a current project!).
The March 14 Makers Social kickoff will be hosted in conjunction with the Museum and Memorial’s latest online exhibition, Charmed Soldiers. Surrounded by industrial violence and death, servicemembers of World War I renewed faith, discovered magic and witnessed miracles in everyday and extraordinary objects. Learn from a Museum curator about the handmade charms that soldiers sought for luck. Museum and Memorial staff will be conducting tutorials to make your own Nanette or Rintintin doll – yarn dolls that were thought to bring good luck to servicemembers during WWI.
Alongside happy hour, history and crafting, guests will have the opportunity to interact with organizations in the Kansas City creative and crafting community who will conduct craft demos and tutorials and share about how guests can get involved.
Future Makers Social events can be found at theworldwar.org. Crafting is for everyone of every age! All levels and interests are welcome at Makers Social, and events are free with registration.
