The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College is hosting an artist talk and reception on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, featuring artist Angeline Rivas in conversation with writer, artist, and performer Christina Catherine Martinez. The talk will take place from 6–7 p.m., followed by a reception. Livestream option is available. The event is free, and an RSVP is requested for both in‑person and livestream attendance.

The program accompanies Rivas’s solo exhibition, I Had a Dark Night of the Soul and All I Got Was This Lousy T‑Shirt, currently on view in the Nerman Museum’s Kansas Focus Gallery through May 3, 2026. This marks the artist’s first institutional solo presentation, showcasing new and recent works including Suboptimalist Manifesto / Birth of Venus (2025).

About the Speakers

Angeline Rivas (b. 1981) was born and raised in Kansas City, MO and is now based in Los Angeles, CA. Rivas earned her MFA in 2022 from the ArtCenter College of Design, Pasadena, CA and her BFA in 2005 from Otis College of Art and Design, Los Angeles, CA.

Christina Catherine Martinez lives and works between Los Angeles, Mexico City, and New England. Her practice is a marriage of her experience as a freelance art critic and her background as a classically trained clown. Christina has written for The Eric Andre Show and Women Wearing Shoulder Pads, the first ever Spanish-language show on Adult Swim.

About the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art

The Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art at Johnson County Community College (JCCC) serves as a cultural leader, facilitating deeper understanding of our world and contemporary issues through their exhibitions and permanent collection. The collection focuses on international, national, and regional contemporary artists, with an emphasis on diverse practitioners and educational access. In addition to gallery spaces within the Nerman Museum, over 300 works from the collection are installed across campus, integrating art into the daily lives of the JCCC campus community as well as greater Kansas City area residents and visitors.

The Nerman Museum is located on the JCCC campus at 12345 College Blvd., Overland Park, KS. It is open to the public on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., and on Sundays, from noon to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
