Foundation. Framework. Freedom. Kansas City’s best artists welcome Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra to the Midwest Trust Center for a weekend of unforgettable jazz music March 7-8.

Features Trent Austin Quartet

On Saturday, hear music from the winner of Johnson County Community College’s Area School Jazz Competition, Gerald Spaits, Chris Hazelton, and a special lecture by Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Dan White. Festivities will be capped off with a performance by the Trent Austin Quartet. Celebrated trumpet artist, educator, clinician, and entrepreneur Trent Austin is a trumpeting Renaissance man. His brilliant performances and recordings in both the jazz and classical music worlds, as well as packed-house master classes, have garnered him rave reviews, awards, and international acclaim.

Highlights Local and International Jazz

Come back Sunday for performances by the Sons of Brasil, the JCCC Jazz Ensemble directed by Professor Ryan Heinlein, Eclipse Trio, and a presentation by author Carolyn Brewer. Headlining the festival will be Arturo O’Farrill and the Afro Latin Jazz Orchestra. The GRAMMY® Award-winning orchestra has enamored international audiences with its creative performances of music by Latin jazz legends such as Tito Puente, Frank “Machito” Grillo, and Chico O’Farrill, as well as new pieces from some of the most accomplished composers and arrangers in Latin music. With programs that showcase its versatility, the orchestra has pushed the boundaries of the genre with daring interpretations, performing and commissioning innovative compositions and big band arrangements by Antonio Sánchez, Miguel Zenón, Dafnis Prieto, Guillermo Klein, Pablo Mayor, Michele Rosewoman, Emilio Solla, Papo Vázquez, Vijay Iyer, and Arturo.
