Not Your Typical Love Story

Rabbits can be very dangerous, or so it seems, in the MET’s premiere production of “Alabama Story,” by Kenneth Jones, coming this April.

Set in 1959 Alabama as the civil rights movement is brewing, a controversial children’s book about a black rabbit marrying a white rabbit stirs the passions of a segregationist state senator and a no-nonsense state librarian. He’s only just moved to Montgomery.

The contrasting story of childhood friends — an African American man and a woman of white privilege, reunited in adulthood — provides a private counterpoint to the public event swirling in the state capital.

Political foes, star-crossed lovers, a determined, heroic librarian and one feisty children’s author inhabit the same page in a Deep South of the imagination that brims with humor, heartbreak, courage and hope. All for the love of books.

A crowd-pleasing and imaginative theatrical comedy drama, “Alabama Story” explores issues with smarts and sensitivity.

This play is appropriate for audiences 12 and over and tickets are on sale at metkc.org or by calling the box office at 816-516-3413.

There’s a world of knowledge that’s ours for the taking in the library. Let’s celebrate that!
