Powell Gardens Welcomes Spring With Rachel Hayes and Summit Art

The Gardens become a gallery as local artists showcase works of art at Powell Gardens

After a long winter, Powell Gardens welcomes Painted Garden. Celebrate the joy and color spreading across the Gardens with inventive botanical displays, spring blooms, and works of art. Rooted in Kansas City’s art community and presented in partnership with Rachel Hayes and Summit Art, Powell Gardens invites you to image the garden as a gallery this spring.

Artist Rachel Hayes

Featured artist, Rachel Hayes, will display her work, Kindred Spirits, in the glass-domed Conservatory. Inspired by traditions of quilt making, sculpture, painting, Minimalism, and Land Art, Hayes designed an installation that embraces light and evokes the opulence of nature and the iconic Midwestern sunset.

Along The Dennis & Annette Young Magnolia Walk and The Dogwood Walk, look for new sculptures installed alongside Powell Gardens’ permanent sculpture collection. Works of art from Summit Art artists will be for sale daily in The Marketplace and at a special Art Walk & Sale (May 13). Enjoy the gardens becoming a gallery Wednesday – Sunday, April 29 – May 31, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Learn more at powellgardens.org/painted-garden.

“Midwest winters can stretch, making the arrival of spring something to truly celebrate,” said Mark Zimmerman, Interim CEO and COO of Powell Gardens. “During Painted Garden, Powell Gardens buzzes with excitement as spring blooms make their way through the soil, new works of art are installed alongside botanic displays, and the days grow longer and warmer.”

Throughout the four-week festival, visitors can expect to be immersed in art – natural and manmade. Additional highlights include guided tours, living succulent walls in Garden Galleries, and art-focused events (listed below).
