Rock musical “Tommy” takes stage this February at Jewish Community Center

TommyThe Who’s rock musical “Tommy,” with its electrifying tunes, dazzling dances and powerful story, will shake things up this February as part of the Jewish Community Center’s Performing Arts Series at the White Theatre.

“Tommy,” the 1993 Tony Award winner for best original score, is Peter Townshend’s story of a young boy’s journey from pain to triumph. After witnessing the accidental murder of his mother’s lover by his father, Tommy is traumatized into catatonia, and as the boy grows, he suffers abuse at the hands of his sadistic relatives and neighbors. As an adolescent, he’s discovered to have an uncanny knack for playing pinball, and when his mother finally breaks through his catatonia, he becomes an international pinball superstar.

The Jewish Community Center production opens Saturday, Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the White Theatre at the Jewish Community Campus, 5801 W. 115th St, Overland Park, KS. Additional evening performances are Feb. 16, 18, 23 and 25; 2 p.m. performances take place on Feb. 12, 19 and 26.

“Tommy is an incredibly energetic piece of musical theatre. It’s electric; a roller coaster ride from beginning to end!   Strap on your seat belt and take this amazing journey!” says Mark Swezey, the production’s director.

“Tommy” is directed by Mark Swezey with music direction by Kristi Mitchell and choreography by Andy Parkhurst. The cast includes a variety of talented local actors including Robert Hingula, a local attorney, in the lead role of Tommy. Hingula’s daughter Darcie is playing the role of young Tommy.
