Step into the spirit of Japan at the 27th Annual Greater Kansas City Japan Festival

The upcoming 27th Annual Greater Kansas City Japan Festival is your ticket to the vibrant culture, rich traditions and dynamic energy of Japan, to experience here in the heart of metropolitan Kansas City. Presented by the local Heart of America Japan-America Society (HAJAS) and held at Johnson County Community College on Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., this unforgettable celebration brings Japan to life for one spectacular day of sights, sounds, tastes, and traditions.

This Year’s Theme is Masks & Myths

Step into a world where every mask tells a story. The 2025 theme, Masks & Myths, explores the fascinating world of Japanese masks — hand-crafted expressions of folklore, religion and spirituality, theater and warrior legend. From ancient rituals to modern interpretations, anime and cosplay, masks are powerful storytellers, steeped in history and cultural meaning.

Japanese Masks date back to the sixth century. Discover the mystique behind a few of the most popular masks:

Kitsune Masks – Inspired by the legendary fox spirit and linked to the Shinto deity Inari, these masks symbolize prosperity, fertility and the spirit world.

Noh Masks – Masterfully carved wooden masks portraying gods, demons, animals, humans and spirits, used by performers in historic Noh Theatre to convey complex emotion through stillness and subtlety. For example, the Hannya Mask depicts the chilling visage of jealousy and rage, within the Buddhist concept of karma, conveying the impact of negative emotions and actions.

Tengu Masks – Often depicted as mountain spirits with long noses or bird-like features, they are believed to offer protection against evil spirits and bring good fortune.

Samurai Masks – Fierce and fearsome, these masks were worn into battle to intimidate enemies and protect warriors — powerful relics of Japan’s martial past. Samurai Masks are found in art museum collections around the world.

The Festival presents a cultural adventure. Whether you’re attracted by the mystery of ancient traditions or drawn to contemporary pop culture, there’s something for everyone.

Enjoy Martial Arts demonstrations filled with power, Japanese music, both traditional and modern, passionate Taiko Drumming, creative and historical Mask workshops and lectures, a bustling Japanese Shopping Bazaar, delicious Japanese cuisine and Anime, Manga, games and Cosplay creative experiences.

Greater Kansas City Japan Festival is a one-day cultural adventure not to miss. Bring your family and friends on Oct. 4 to JCCC!
