“The Three Robbers,” by Tomi Ungerer (Phaidon Press Inc.; American Edition (March 21, 2009)
The Rabbit hOle’s first-ever adult literature symposium “Blunderbuss! Exploring the Legacy of Tomi Ungerer,” Nov. 14-15, celebrates his life and award-winning work. Called a “spectacular graphic genius” by Maurice Sendak, Ungerer published more than 140 books including classics The Three Robbers, Moonman and Crictor. His body of work also spanned advertising, political posters, illustration, sculpture and architectural design.
“Tomi Ungerer was an incredible artist, writer and designer who also happened to be one of the 20th century’s most important picture book creators. His poster work alone is legendary,” said Pete Cowdin, cofounder and director of The Rabbit hOle.
Billed as a once-in-a-generation event, the symposium features an all-star lineup of speakers and special guests including Aria Ungerer, Susan Hirschman, Steve Heller, Lisa Brown, Gary Groth, Betsy Bird, Jon Agee, Kate Feiffer, Brad Bernstein, Maria Russo, Philip Nel and K-Fai Steele.
The Rabbit hOle will also screen the documentary Far Out Isn’t Far Enough with an introduction from filmmaker Brad Bernstein.
“Blunderbuss! Exploring the Legacy of Tomi Ungerer” will be held Nov. 14-15, at The Rabbit hOle, 919 E. 14th Ave., North Kansas City. Tickets, schedule and more information available at www.rabbitholekc.org/blunderbuss.
