American Indian Art Joins Crossroads First Fridays
One of the best-kept secrets you can discover on First Fridays is housed in a company headquarters at 310 W. 19th Terrace. In fall 2017, Travois, a Kansas City-based consulting firm focused on promoting housing and economic development in Native American communities, launched an intertribal, international exhibition series dedicated to indigenous artists. It encompasses drawing, painting, textiles, architecture, jewelry, sculpture and photography, curated by experts in the field.

A Plea for the Planet
Celebrating nature’s alluring power while simultaneously warning of the perils that threaten our natural world, “Big Botany: Conversations with the Plant World,” is a sweeping botanical tapestry of works by 50 artists spanning six centuries. Five years in the planning, the exhibit at the Spencer Museum of Art in Lawrence reflects a lifetime passion of curator Stephen Goddard.

The Job: Elizabeth Darr
Elizabeth Darr, a docent at both the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and the Kemper Museum, admits she only took one course in art history in college — and it was only the second half of a yearlong survey course. Although her university studies may have been limited, she has since completed a rigorous training course to become a docent. Darr moved to Kansas City in 1997 to work as an ob-gyn; after five years, she found another practice in central Massachusetts.
