What role should artificial intelligence play in the way humans learn? What aid could AI offer in understanding complex topics, and are today’s emerging technologies equipped to explore the nuances of human expression?

These questions and more will be the topics of discussion at this year’s annual Cockefair Chair Luncheon, hosted by UMKC’s Advisory Cockefair Chair in Continuing Education.

This year’s featured speaker is author and UMKC professor of philosophy, Clancy Martin who will speak about his latest project, “Rebind,” an AI-powered learning tool that explores the intersections of technology, ethics and human consciousness.

Described by some as “the future of reading,” Rebind is an e-reading experience that integrates AI chat functions throughout the pages of great works of literature. Rebind seeks to create engaging and highly personal conversations around the text, allowing readers to more deeply explore their thoughts and emotions about themes, relationships and actions portrayed in literature and to even reflect on how those topics apply to their own lives. In addition, Rebind offers pre-recorded interviews with literary experts to create a guided and immersive experience that adds context to the great works.

Martin, a Kansas City local, is widely known for his work on mental health and moral philosophy. He has published more than ten books and novels, including titles such as How Not to Kill Yourself and The Philosophy of Deception. His writing has been featured in such publications as The New Yorker, The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

This year’s Cockefair Chair Luncheon will be held at the Carriage Club in Kansas City, at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, August 13.

You’re invited to join the conversation as Martin and fellow attendees explore how Rebind was conceptualized, how it may be applied, and the broader philosophical questions it raises regarding the role of artificial intelligence in supporting human learning.
