Hindu Spring Event Coming March 10

One of India’s colorful festivals is being celebrated in the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center (HTCC) located in Shawnee on March 10, 2012. Holi is a time of enjoying spring’s abundant colors and saying farewell to winter. This festival is celebrated by people throwing colors at each other and on the eve of the festival people light bonfires and sing around it. One of Holi’s biggest customs is bringing together people of diverse religions and backgrounds together.

First time in its 30-year history, HTCC invites the open participation of school children and all other enthusiasts of all ages across greater Kansas City area to enjoy and experience this unique cultural extravaganza.  The event is sponsored by several regional organizations.

One of the highlights of this colorful event is serving more than 30 different kinds of food delicacies from different regions of India. “With its extraordinary diversity of food, it will be a mouth watering ensemble prepared by hundreds of volunteers said, the coordinator Dr. Usha Saha.

It is often mentioned that through this festival, the tradition of throwing colors in the air symbolizes throwing away your worries and experiencing your freedom. In India during the festival neighborhoods and people come together throwing colors on each other. It is almost like a kaleidoscope where all colors merge and speaks one universal language of brotherhood and friendship.

Another interesting aspect of the event is an opportunity to learn hands on the art of drawing Rangoli (is a traditional decorative folk art designs drawn on floors using colored powder) and Henna, the herbal tattoos, which is a great tradition from the Indian Culture.
