When patrons step through the doors of the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts, they are greeted by a welcoming smile and a familiar blue vest. These friendly faces belong to dedicated volunteers who play an essential role in creating a warm, memorable experience for every visitor.

“It has been an enriching experience to meet the many volunteers, staff and patrons while serving as a volunteer at the Kauffman Center. It is rewarding to be able to enjoy these outstanding events. The architecture and beauty of the Kauffman Center make it a privilege to serve in such an icon of Kansas City.” — Frank Hawk, volunteer since 2012

Volunteers support the Kauffman Center’s mission of delivering diverse and extraordinary arts experiences through customer service, education and community engagement. They contribute their time and talents in many ways, including greeting patrons, scanning tickets, ushering guests to their seats and participating in outreach initiatives. Their efforts help entertain and educate tens of thousands of people each year through hundreds of performances, concerts and special events across all genres.

The Kauffman Center’s volunteer corps includes approximately 500 individuals, each bringing unique skills and life experiences. While some volunteers have prior experience in customer service or event support, many do not. What unites them is a shared enthusiasm for collaboration, meeting new people and welcoming the community to world-class performances. Last season alone, 514 volunteers contributed 52,452 hours across 12,056 shifts, with more than half having served the organization for five or more years.

“When I was growing up, our family was not exposed to the arts. Since I started volunteering here in September 2017 I have been exposed to the Symphony, Ballet, Opera and many other performances at Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Volunteering has broadened my experiences, and I have found I like performances that I had not experienced before.” — Mark Dickerson, 2,500+ hours of volunteer service

Community members interested in volunteering can apply during the annual recruitment period through the Kauffman Center’s volunteer page. Accepted applicants may enter the apprentice program, which serves as the selection and training process for new volunteers. Participants complete in-person training sessions, online evaluations and guided-usher shifts alongside experienced volunteers. Ongoing opportunities for advanced and refresher training ensure all volunteers are well prepared to deliver the Kauffman Center’s customer service philosophy of “Making It Memorable.”

“When I was nearing retirement, I was concerned about what I would do to occupy my time. So, I decided that being a volunteer at the Kauffman Center sounded like a good idea… I have been a member of the blue vest club ever since. It’s rewarding on many different levels and I’m proud to be a part of such a great group of people that I now call my friends.” — Rebecca Kester, volunteer since 2011

Through their dedication and generosity, volunteers remain at the heart of the Kauffman Center experience, helping create moments that inspire, connect and resonate long after the curtain falls.
