Join us in the Flint Hills at Volland to honor the extraordinary legacy of Symphony in the Flint Hills which raised awareness and appreciation of the Tallgrass prairie by celebrating its ecology, history and art with a concert in a Flint Hills pasture, lovingly performed by the Kansas City Symphony. Last year was the final event of this beloved Kansas tradition.
A Symphony in the Flint Hills Field Journal was a unique companion to each event, a fine compendium of historical articles, contemporary writing, scientific essays, poems, and visual art.
At the invitation of the Volland Foundation, Matt Regier curated A Tribute to the Art of the Symphony in the Flint Hills Field Journals. The exhibit presents work from Terry Evans, Lisa Grossman, Philip Heying, Mary Kay, Bill McBride, Clare Doveton, Jim Richardson and Zak Barnes. Each contributed art to the field journal over the years. All were included in the final volume.
Matt Regier, artist, curator and art editor of Symphony in the Flint Hills Field Journal, is co-founder with his wife Tia, of The School for Rural Culture and Creativity in Matfield Green, Kansas.
Doors open at 5:30pm. Enjoy the exhibit, artist conversations, dinner, exploration of Volland grounds – and bring your memories of the Symphony to share with friends. At 8pm the Ruin will come alive with the Cherokee Maidens performing a memorable concert under the stars.
