Ireland and World War I
As part of the United Kingdom, Ireland entered World War I against Germany in August 1914, and although Irish nationalists had long been fighting for a separate homeland, they also realized that supporting the war effort would strengthen the chances of gaining their nation’s independence. During Ireland and World War I, Archivist Jonathan Casey will discuss the various places, personalities and events that have a connection to Ireland in the Great War. Located in the Museum’s Research Center, this event is included with admission to the Museum and free for members.

Adam Hochschild Presents WWI’s Other War: The Battle Between Governments and War Resisters
The First World War killed some 9 million soldiers and perhaps an even larger number of civilians. Who tried to stop the carnage? New York Times best-selling author Adam Hochschild will discuss this unique look at the Great War as well as his most recent book, To End All Wars: A Story of Loyalty and Rebellion, 1914-1918, which will be available for purchase and signing at the event. Located in the J.C. Nichols Auditorium, this event is included with admission to the Museum and free for members. Cosponsored by UMKC.

RECRUITS Game Day
Discover a unique hobby that promotes learning history through gaming. Members from RECRUITS, a historical, fantasy and sci-fi wargaming convention, will demonstrate WWI-themed miniature games in the J.C. Nichols Auditorium Lobby. Guests will be invited to play as well. Included with admission to the Museum and free for members.

Medical Matinee: A Farewell to Arms
Medical Matinee is a medical-themed movie series.
This 1932 adaptation of Ernest Hemingway’s novel features Gary Cooper as American soldier Lt. Henry and his ill-fated love affair with British Nurse Catherine, portrayed by Helen Hayes, during World War I. 80 minutes. Not rated. Located in the J.C. Nichols Auditorium, this event is included with admission to the Museum and free for members.

Life on the Battlefields 94 Years Later
Having lived on the battlefields of Third Ypres (also known as the Battle of Passchendaele), Charlotte Descamps brings the story of how a conflict that is about to slip away in time, is still affecting people’s lives many years later. This illustrated lecture will take place in the J.C. Nichols Auditorium. It is included with admission to the Museum and free for members.

Medical Matinee is a medical-themed movie series.
A story of desperate love and imminent danger, Sandra Bullock and Chris O’Donnell star in this epic love story about Ernest Hemingway and the romance which inspired him to write his masterpiece A Farewell to Arms. Anatomy of a Donation
One of last year’s most popular member-only events is now open to the public! In this lively “show and tell,” Senior Curator Doran Cart will talk about the largest single donation of objects and archival materials in the Museum’s 92-year history. From initial contact with the potential donor, to actually seeing the materials in total, to packing and shipping, processing the items into the collection and finally, how objects and documents are used in the Museum will be illustrated. Located in the J.C. Nichols Auditorium, this event is included with admission to the Museum and free for members.

Honoring Our History Traveling Gallery
The custom 18-wheel “big rig” truck that was transformed into a WWI gallery will be parked outside the Museum and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Visitors will be able to tour the traveling gallery free of charge, thanks to the generosity of Waddell & Reed in commemoration of the Kansas City company’s 75th anniversary.

Vintage Military Vehicle Display
Vintage Military Vehicle Display on the Museum’s southeast lawn. The Military Vehicle Preservation Association “Hell on Wheels” Chapter displays vintage military vehicles and their members are available to answer questions about their collection. Displays will include vehicles from World War II, Korea and Vietnam. Free to the public.

Memorial Day Ceremony
Located on the south side of the Museum, the Memorial Day Ceremony begins with a color guard parade and includes performances by the American Legion Band, a keynote address and other speeches to pay tribute to the day’s significance. The Museum will open immediately following the ceremony (approximately 11 a.m.).
